Mock Trial Team Boasts Undefeated Season

Our Mock Trial team has been having another outstanding season, completing Phase 1 of the County Competitions undefeated in all 8 matches. The sudden-death championship phase begins March 13 and ends March 15 as we play against excellent teams from Duanesburg, Mohonesan, and Niskayuna. The winner of the County Championship will then play in an 8-county regional tournament in late April, with the State Tournament in mid-May.

This year's case, issued statewide by the New York State Bar Association, is centered on a fictional school's zero tolerance for bullying policy, which leads to a student being arrested for disorderly conduct. In preparing the case as both prosecution and defense, our students have engaged in interesting discussion about what defines bullying, how schools may respond to the issue,  as well as the benefits and downside of police officers being present on school campuses. Students research case law and learn to develop arguments as they think on their feet.

We are very proud of our team: Seniors Matt Biega, Reagan Schwartz, Jula Megyeri and Dylan Sawyer; Sophomores Abby Verhayden, Alexis Bye, Jilda Alvord, Noah Decker, Audrey Vermilyea, Evelyn Bushway and Anna Guzzo; and Freshman Thomas Verbicky.  Attorney coaches Bethany Dixon ('09) and Kirk Lewis generously share their time and skill. Teacher coaches are Mrs Anchukaitis and Mrs Neidl.
