Summer Reading for AP Psychology

You were given one of the following books to read for a Summer reading last June. You will need to do a FIVE page reflection paper due .

For Jane Eyre consider the following:
J.B. Watson and other behavioral psychologists believe that the main concern in studying behavior is observable behavior and not mental processes. B.F. Skinner, a fellow behavioral psychologist, believed that behavior changes as a result of consequences. Freud believed that early childhood had a profound impact on later personality development.

After reading the book, select Jane, Mr. Rochester, or Bertha and explain how one of the characters affirms or contradicts these theories.

OR

For Grimm’s Fairy Tales consider the following:

" By dealing with universal human problems, particularly those which occupy a child’s mind, these stories speak to his budding ego and encourage its development" Bettelheim. When you think of fairy tales, do you see the above statement as accurate or do you feel that these folk stories , cause unrealistic expectations or even needless fear and stress? After reading the book, use what you have read to affirm or contradict the statement. Would Freud feel that the tales presented were positive or damaging to the child’s expectations of what life has in store? Would Freud have "sanitized" some of the tales, as in Disney presentations, or let them stand as they were written?

The papers are to be typed, in black, New Times Roman no larger or smaller than font 12.  There are to be one inch margins all around. Double space between each sentence. DO NOT leave large spaces between paragraphs or you will lose points.

All papers are due September 15,2008 at the start of class.

Include the edition of the book you used in the bibliography. If you quote directly from the text, which I expect you to do, foot note or cite note.

Summer Reading for AP European History

You were given one of the following books in June for your Summer Reading.

The Prince by Machiavelli or Utopia by Thomas More

In The Prince, the reader is presented with a blueprint to keep a ruler in power. In Utopia, an ideal society is outlined. You will need to read one of the books and explain the basic ideas considered central to the work by the author. How do the author’s ideas translate into the world of today?

You will need to read the book and not something like Spark Notes.  You will need to write a 5 page paper.  The paper must be typed in black with no smaller or larger than font 12.  The paper must be double spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides.  DO NOT leave large spaces between paragraphs.  There must be a bibliography which includes the book used, including the translator.  There should be footnotes, however, these should not be half a page or longer.

The paper is due at the start of class on September 15, 2009.

If you are enrolled in the class and did not receive a book, please see Mr. Honsinger.

Summer Reading for AP US History

You will need to read TWO books, one required and one you will select from the list provided.

Required text: The Founding Brothers by Joseph J. Ellis

The questions for this book can be found on this site. You must do the Question for Chapter 6. Consider the other questions a guide for your reading.
The required books were loaned to students in June. If you did not get a text there are a limited number still in the Guidance office.

The second reading is YOUR CHOICE from the list provided. Choose One book from either the novels or non-fiction list and read it over the summer. Be prepared to present a report on it to the class. The books from this list may be obtained from a library or a reputable book store.
